Boys & Girls Club
The West End Ministries' Boys and Girls Club is an official site of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater High Point, Inc., the Positive Place for Kids. Our club is open Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. And all day during the summer and school holidays. Children, ranging in age from 5-15 enjoy free time, homework, a nutritious dinner and a variety of community building activities.
Emergency Assistance
Emergency assistance in the form of utility or rental/mortgage assistance is provided to households in danger of losing their homes. Residents meet with our Case Manager to determine eligibility, to develop a financial plan and learn about other resources in the community. WEM is a member agency of the Community Resource Network and we strive to coordinate services with other agencies in the community.
Food Ministry
Charles and Manilla Dean-Directors
At West End Ministries, we are committed to serving the community through the Food Ministry. The Community Meal is a hot meal served weekly on Thursday evenings. On Friday mornings, neighbors can receive loaves of bread to help stretch their grocery budget. Neighbors can also receive boxes of canned food and other food items that is equivalent to a week’s worth of groceries from the food pantry on the first Thursday of every month or in emergency situations. Many of our friends and neighbors rely heavily on the Food Ministry each month and this could not be accomplished without the generosity of time, food and financial resources from the High Point community.
Kids’ Cafe
Connie Garceau, Director
The Kids’ Café is a program of the Second Harvest Food Bank that aims to address the growing problem of childhood hunger. Kids’ Café provides area youth that are at risk of going hungry with an evening meal three nights a week. Many of the participants are active in the West End Boys & Girls Club located in the West End Community Center. Kids’ Café is a vital ministry to children and their families in the West End of High Point.
Life Skills Education
Chris Gillespie-Program Director
Life Skills Coaching is designed to address the needs of people in our community that desire to participate in life changing activities.
Classes are designed to provide a varied curriculum from the very basic life skills to the more advanced job preparedness classes. Subjects that will be covered include time management, parenting, budgeting, health care, nutrition, basic and advanced computer training, conflict resolution and dress for success.
WEM Neighborhood Association
The West End Neighborhood Association is a community initiative for the revitalization of the West End of High Point. West End Ministries supports the West End Neighborhood Association’s goals of promoting home ownership, reducing crime, hosting neighborhood clean up days and other special events. The interim president of the Neighborhood Association is Johnn Marie Kruse. The Neighborhood Association meets every month at the West End Community Center.
Senior Adult Activities
Chris Gillespie, Program Director
West End Ministries recognizes that there is a thriving population of senior adult citizens in the West End neighborhood. By providing Senior programs, neighbors are still able to be involved and active in the community around them. One of the favorite programs offered is “Movies, Munchies and More.” This offers participants the chance to enjoy a movie and socialize with one another. The seniors also enjoy trips and outings. Participants have the chance to get out and explore High Point and other areas. In the past, the group has traveled as far as the Amish Country in Pennsylvania, Myrtle Beach and the State Fair. Another popular senior activity is Bingo. While Bingo can be competitive, everyone is a winner because of the wonderful atmosphere and friendship that has evolved through the senior programs.
VITA Tax Services
VITA Tax Services provide free tax preparation services to neighbors in the community making less than $41,000 per year.
